Chapter Seventeen

Thiea

After talking with Jaz, I mean, Anna? Mom?

Man, this will take some time to get used to.

We polished off the ancient scotch, ate a bowl full of dates and nuts, and laughed until Shoan, Arif, and Niamh arrived in the garden. Their arrival heralded that Shoan was indeed still alive, and that neither Arif or his sister had maimed him. That was good, plus, I was feeling pretty buzzed.

Thinking back on it, I've always felt different. I guess that clears up tons of questions. My dad is a vampire and my mom is a werewolf, and I'm falling for a man that I just met who’s almost as old as dinosaurs. Well, not that old, but damn near close to a time in the world where everything was sticks and rocks.

What could be more exciting than that?

My understanding of soul mates had been Disney’d over the years. It was garbage dreams for princesses and only for the lucky. That was until I had seen how happy Jaz was when Arif entered the room. The searing heat of being together, entwined as one, made you stronger. That if you were to lose one another in death, you would cease to live almost instantaneously. You hear stories on the news every so often of a man who dies, and his wife who dies days or hours later. In them, I see the truth of it. It’s not as surreal or as fantastical as I’d expected.

It’s permanent. It’s ingrained on you like a tattoo. Literally.

I had never thought of myself as someone's soul mate, as someone's everything, let alone anything. All I know is that I don't want to miss this opportunity to see where it goes. I definitely don't want to go home to Toronto without figuring this out, that’s for sure.

As we wait in line at the restaurant, I stand beside Shoan and take his hand in mine, relishing the feel of someone wanting to hold my hand. Toying with my necklace, my impulsive side is rearing its ugly head. If I take it off, fur will fly or I’ll fly, or maybe nothing at all will happen. Slipping the beads through my fingers, I’m so tempted to remove it.

Hearing my internal musings. "What’s the deal with your necklace?" Shoan asks.

"I guess you’ll have to stay tuned. Jaz wants me to keep it on for now. So, I don’t go all freaky-deaky in public."

“May I?” Arif asks, stepping close and motioning to the necklace.

Nodding that he can inspect it, he gathers the tiny beads and the frail chain between his thick fingers to inspect it. "I’m glad you’re dealing with this so well. I had to trade something precious to a very damaged sex demon to get the enchantment attached to something so intricate. I guess it was worth it. It’s kept you safe and hidden for nearly thirty years."

“Yep. No wild kingdom moments that I can remember. Unless I consider that one time,”he jokes, laughing. I remember a time at the zoo as a kid.
